Editor's Note (Aug 2020): Home

Words by D. Illustration by Valerie Yeo.

Home. A site where relationships are organised in certain gendered and heteronormative ways. A crushing disciplining of the body and mind to fit the patterns that we are still stuck in.

Home. Where a past version of myself resides. A place not my own because of the choices made by others.

Home. A place I left (and found again when I see myself reflected in the eyes of people I love).

Home. A constantly shifting equilibrium. An acquainting and reacquainting. A moving target.

The pieces in this issue provide different ways of making sense of and redefining “home”. They explore what makes home safe/unsafe (and for whom), home as a part of everyday life, and home as an ideal.

This issue was conceptualised before wearing a face mask while out in public was required. The past few months have emphasised the need for communities to come together to care for those whose homes are not safe places or who could use some assistance. Redistribute wealth and contribute in whatever way you can through mutual aid or by donating to organisations serving the migrant worker community
